“If the walls could talk,” they always said. But you know better. In the late hours, during the absolute darkness, the walls will open their maws and whisper their secrets, shared through cries and wails and mimicry of the horrors within. You’re a private investigator with the unique talent of teasing out their mysteries and piecing together their meanings.
This is a solo journaling RPG about the knowledge of the walls. You play it by yourself in the dark.
As you draw cards, you’ll be directed to prompts to write as the P.I. trying to solve a mystery. Throughout the game, you’ll draw cards from your constructed Whispers Deck to learn what the walls, ceiling and floors are telling or showing you, keep notes on what you think it all means and ultimately conclude the truth.
A session takes between 15 and 60 minutes and is highly replayable. Each session is unique!

I've played a few times and had a lot of fun creating the story. I did have to shake loose and stop trying to guide the story to a preconceived ending, that was always better when I didn't do that. The prompts are wonderfully diverse and chilling.
Inspired by the game and enabled by the generous CC By 4.0 license, a group of us did a visual novel / journaling game based on WitW for the NanoReno Game Jam. There is preface and epilogue that place the PI into a particular time/space/culture, but the rest of the prompts are procedurally generated similar to the WitW rules, the whispers and ending changed slightly to represent first person and a questioner.
We also added a method to upload the results/journal anonymously to a server, so we can collect/curate and display some of the stories, once we get enough entries.

Whispers in the Walls is a mystery horror game about learning the secrets of a cursed place. You take on the role of a private eye and attempt to figure out what’s going on in only 8 moves.
This game only requires a deck of cards, and you start by sorting out the jokers and spaces into their own deck. You then take 3 cards from the spades deck and 6 from the other deck. These are the only cards you will be using throughout the game.
The first card will determine your location and the rest will be events that happen in the game. The value of the last card you draw will also determine how the game ends.
I explored an old rural hospital that housed patients with mysterious symptoms that have never been seen before or since. My PI didn’t really come to any definitive conclusions, but they were left with a bunch of clues for a bigger mystery at hand. You can find my playthrough Here
